Celebrating Chandeleur

You can leave it to the country of food to have another fantastic food holiday to enjoy!

Chandeleur, 2nd February

We don't really need an excuse to eat crêpes, but if we did this would be it! Every year, France goes crêpe crazy 40 days after Christmas Day - known elsewhere in the world as Candlemas and/or French Pancake Day.

Rolling on from the not-so-doldrum of January (thanks to the Galette des Rois), Chandeleur stands out as a delightful celebration that combines culinary artistry with a touch of superstition.

The most beloved and iconic tradition of Chandeleur is the making and consuming of crêpes, thin pancakes that have become synonymous with French cuisine.

How to celebrate Chandeleur:

Making crêpes on Chandeleur is more than just a culinary exercise; it involves a fun and slightly superstitious ritual. According to popular belief, if you can flip a crêpe with one hand while holding a coin in the other, you will have good luck for the coming year. Very much like Galette des Rois, this tradition has inspires friends and family to gather for a bit of festive fun.

So, whether you're in France or miles away, take a moment on February 2nd to savor the taste of a freshly made crêpe and join in the spirit of Chandeleur.

*don’t forget the ‘Crêpe’ refers to the sweet version! A ‘galette’ on the other hand is savory and often made with buckwheat flour!
