As many of you caffeine lovers will know, the coffee scene in Paris has enjoyed an amazing upswing in recent years with discerning brewers, roasters and coffee-crafters taking on the challenge of raising the city's brewing game. Thanks to these connoisseurs, these days in Paris there is a twinkling galaxy of coffee stars to choose from, so you're never far from a meticulously made espresso, a leaf-topped latte or a carefully sourced single-origin espresso.
Loustic - located in the northern Marais neighbourhood just a minute or two from the Pompidou Centre - has played its own part in that coffee revolution. Owner Channa Galhenage moved to Paris from London over a decade ago, and after years of Paris's not-so-great coffee, decided to take matters into his own hands. Happily, he wasn't the only one with dreams of good coffee in Paris! While Channa was planning what would soon become Loustic, fellow coffee-lovers were similarly inspired - and from this small group of passionate coffee makers comes some of the best coffee the city enjoys today - Coutume, Belleville Brûlerie, Téléscope, Fondation. Along with Channa Galhenage at Loustic, these now well-known names in the Paris coffee world were the game-changers - we can't thank them enough!
We learned firsthand on a recent visit to Loustic (perhaps you saw it on our Instagram stories!) that if you want to enjoy a cup of coffee at a cafe where the exact science of a good cup is not just understood but celebrated, then Loustic is the place to be. Here all the chemistry and technique of coffee is distilled right into the perfect brew of your choosing - and if you want to know a bit about the science behind it all, you'll find the friendly staff more than willing to share their expertise! If you'd like to gain some insight into other small Paris businesses, be sure to follow us on Instagram, because we'll be checking out lots of independent addresses you should certainly know about.
Loustic has a cosy, eclectic feel that is perfect for settling in with a coffee and a good book, or you can enjoy a single-origin espresso before picking up a bag of beans to go. At the moment you'll be able to choose between beans from Comobia, Peru, Ethiopia or Rwanda, all roasted by Caffenation Specialty Roasters in Antwerp.
One thing we definitely learned is that you need a good steady hand for latte art....but we're quite proud of the results as a first attempt!
