How To Keep Cool In Paris

Summer in Paris is an invitation to slow down, embrace the rhythm of the season, and experience the city at its most vibrant, atmospheric, and effortlessly charming! As the days grow longer and warmer, locals and visitors alike gather in parks, gardens, and on café terraces to make the most of the sunshine.

During a heatwave, known in France as 'une canicule', temperatures can rise quickly. With air conditioning still relatively uncommon, Parisians adapt by embracing a slower pace, seeking out shaded streets, leafy gardens, cooling fountains, and other refreshing corners of the city. It's all part of experiencing Paris like a local -taking time to pause, stay cool, and enjoy the city's unique summer atmosphere!

Early mornings are the perfect time to explore Paris before the city fully awakens. Quiet streets, cooler temperatures, and soft morning light create an unhurried start to the day. As the heat builds, retreat to hidden courtyards, enjoy long shaded lunches, or spend a few hours exploring the city’s many museums and galleries.

By evening, Paris comes alive once again. The banks of the Seine fill with people enjoying the last golden light of the day, while cafés and terraces buzz with conversation. Long summer evenings and late sunsets invite everyone outdoors as the air begins to cool.

To help you make the most of the season, here are some top tips for staying cool in Paris this summer!

Paris Plage

One of the highlights of summer in Paris is Paris Plages, the city's annual transformation of the Seine riverbanks into vibrant urban beaches. Complete with deckchairs, swimming areas, cultural events, and spaces to relax by the water, it offers a refreshing escape without leaving the city.

From 4th of July to the end of August, Paris Plages returns for its 25th edition. This year's programme celebrates American culture to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence, with additional events and activities set to be announced in the lead-up to the season.

Since its launch in 2002, Paris Plages has transformed the capital into a summer retreat each year, inviting locals and visitors to enjoy long, leisurely days by the Seine or Canal. Whether you're looking to cool off, soak up the atmosphere, or simply unwind by the water, it's one of the city's signature summer experiences!

Visitors will be able to enjoy six swimming sites across Paris:

Bassin de la Villette

Canal Saint-Martin

Parc Rives de Seines

Bras Marie (4th)

Bras de Grenelle (15th)

Quai de Bercy (12th)

All sites are free to access, monitored for safety, and regularly tested for water quality, marking the continued return of swimming in the Seine during the summer months.

Paris Plages includes lifeguarded swimming, water sports, family workshops, games, open-air reading areas, exhibitions, and a wide range of free cultural events along the Seine and across the city.

 Swimming Pools

Paris offers plenty of options for a refreshing swim. From modern complexes to historic gems, Parisian pools are as varied as the neighborhoods!

Piscine Joséphine Baker in the 13th arrondissement is a floating pool with a glass roof right on the Seine. In summer, the roof opens, letting you swim while watching the river drift by.

For a touch of Art Deco glamour, Piscine Molitor (16th arrondissement) offers both indoor and outdoor pools, sun terraces, and an iconic Parisian atmosphere.

Neighborhood pools are scattered across the city, making a swim an easy addition to any itinerary. Favorites include Piscine Pontoise, Piscine Keller, La Butte-aux-Cailles, Piscine Roger Le Gall, Piscine Georges Hermant and Piscine Pailleron, Piscine Georges Vallerey.

Most Parisian pools require a swimming cap, and many offer a combination of indoor and outdoor spaces depending on the season.

Parks, Water Misters and Fountains

During Paris heatwaves, the city adds a touch of surprise relief: water misters or 'brumisateurs' in public squares and parks. These gentle sprays are designed to cool you as you walk past.

Some of the most popular spots include Place de la Bastille, Place de la Concorde, Square du Temple, Jardin Nelson Mandela, and along Paris Plages on the Seine. They can also be found in some of the small neighbourhood parks.

Staying hydrated is equally easy as Paris has a wide network of public drinking fountains, Some even have sparkling water, and misters! For convenience, the full interactive map can be found here: Drinking Fountains in Paris.

For those seeking shade, the city maintains a detailed interactive map of cooling areas and shaded parks: Paris “îlots de fraîcheur” map. Large green spaces such as Bois de Boulogne, Bois de Vincennes, Parc Monceau and Jardin du Luxembourg provide welcome relief.

During particularly intense heatwaves, select parks even stay open late into the night, offering a chance to enjoy the city in cooler evening hours.

Indoor spaces

Museums serve a dual role in summer: cultural destinations and cool refuges! While the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay remain perennial favourites, smaller institutions are often easier to enjoy during periods of intense heat.

The Petit Palais offers a shaded courtyard, the Musée Marmottan Monet provides peaceful galleries, and the Musée de Cluny's medieval architecture helps keep interiors naturally cool. The Fondation Louis Vuitton combines air-conditioned exhibition spaces with landscaped outdoor areas and water features.

The city's historic landmarks and churches such as Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Notre-Dame remain noticeably cooler than the streets outside, thanks to their thick stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and centuries-old architecture. The Musée Carnavalet, the Conciergerie, and the Panthéon similarly combine cooler interiors with some of Paris's richest history.

For a quieter escape, libraries including the Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand and the BnF Richelieu provide calm, temperature-controlled environments, elegant reading rooms, and ideal spaces to spend a hot afternoon.

Those willing to venture underground will find even cooler conditions. The Catacombes remain consistently cool throughout the year, while the Musée des Égouts offers a unique glimpse into the hidden waterways of Paris.

Cinemas are another popular refuge during heatwaves. Independent theatres such as La Filmothèque du Quartier Latin pair air-conditioned comfort with screenings of French classics and Golden Age Hollywood films, making them a favourite midday retreat for locals.

Ice Cream

Paris offers a wide range of ice cream, from historic establishments to inventive artisan shops with desserts created by top pastry chefs. The city is also home to numerous Italian gelaterias serving authentic gelato.

In the Marais, Une Glace à Paris showcases pastry-level craftsmanship through beautifully executed frozen desserts and seasonal creations. Pozzetto and Angiolo draw loyal crowds for their Italian gelato, with pistachio and hazelnut among the favourites.

The neighbourhood is also home to REŸS - Glaces Éternelles and La Glacerie, where ice cream takes on a creative, pâtisserie-inspired form.

For unique and bold flavours, Glaces Glazed serves combinations such as black sesame, cubeb pepper caramel, and green cardamom.

FUMO explores unexpected pairings, including cornichon and wasabi seeds, as well as burnt rice with Nyons olive oil.

La Tropicale is celebrated for its tropical fruit sorbets and globally inspired flavours. La Glace Alain Ducasse focuses on exceptional chocolate, nuts, and dairy, while Pierre Marcolini brings the Belgian chocolatier's dedication to sourcing and craftsmanship to ice cream and sorbet.

JJ Hings Ice Cream has become a local favourite for its seasonal flavours and excellent ice cream sandwiches.

Among the city's smaller artisans, Isotope stands out for inventive combinations such as plum and smoked harissa, mirabelle plum and lime, watermelon and olive oil, and cucumber with elderflower.

La Fabrique Givrée, Les Gourmandises, and La Combine are also worth seeking out for their creative flavours and commitment to quality.

For something traditional and classic, Berthillon on Île Saint-Louis remains one of the city's oldest addresses from 1954, renowned for its artisanal ice cream and fruit sorbets.

Whether you're craving a classic sorbet, a perfectly executed gelato, or something unexpected and inventive, Paris offers a flavour for every taste!

Escape the City!

When Paris heats up, Normandy's coast offers a refreshing escape, with cooler temperatures and fresh sea air just two hours away by train.

Deauville is known for its wide sandy beaches, elegant Belle Époque architecture, and iconic boardwalk, making it ideal for a relaxed day by the sea. Nearby, Honfleur charms visitors with its picturesque harbour, half-timbered houses, galleries, and waterfront restaurants serving fresh oysters and local seafood.

Closer to Paris, shaded forests and historic gardens provide another welcome escape from the heat. The Forest of Fontainebleau offers vast woodlands and peaceful walking trails, while Versailles is home to expansive gardens, tree-lined avenues, and tranquil parkland - both perfect for escaping the summer heat!
